Meet the Women Running for Mayor


Kathryn Garcia

Kathryn Garcia was appointed in 2014 as the Commissioner NYC Department of Sanitation, the world's largest municipal waste management agency. In 2018, Kathryn was appointed Senior Advisor for Citywide Lead Prevention where she spearheaded a comprehensive plan to eradicate childhood lead exposure. In 2019, Garcia was appointed CEO and Interim Chair of the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), where she worked to reverse decades of disinvestment in public housing. During the City's COVID-19 response, Kathryn served as "Food Czar,” and was responsible for building a program of unprecedented scale -- 130 million meals -- to feed hungry and vulnerable New Yorkers. Kathryn Garcia is a skilled and experienced government executive who will govern the same way she has approached every challenge in her career--data-driven and focused. Kathryn is a mother of two who lives in Park Slope Brooklyn, the neighborhood where she grew up.


Dianne Morales

Dianne Morales is a first generation Puerto Rican, born in Brooklyn, to working class parents, who believed that in the American Dream that success was possible for everyone – and that those who attained success had a responsibility to lift others. She's also the single mother of two young adults, and the first Afro-Latina candidate for Mayor of New York. Dianne's personal experiences, combined with 25 years of leadership experience in the nonprofit sector have given her a deep understanding of our city's dysfunctional education, justice, and health care systems. She has served as founding member of Jumpstart, Executive Director of the Door and most recently, Phipps Neighborhoods. Dianne's leadership and advocacy in education, employment, and social justice have improved the lives of New Yorkers. Dianne is committed to providing access for all New Yorkers to housing for all, excellence and equity in education, radically reimagined public safety, and a solidarity economy.


Brigadier General Loree Sutton, MD

Brigadier General Loree Sutton, MD is a lifelong public servant who has devoted 35 years of service to the nation and New York. Loree’s decorated Army career includes earning a Bronze Star for her actions in combat while deployed to Operation Desert Storm. In New York City, Loree served as the Founding Commissioner for New York City’s Department of Veterans’ Services. Under Sutton’s leadership, DVS pioneered numerous groundbreaking policy and innovative program successes. Select DVS actions include achieving a 90% decrease in veteran homelessness and establishing veterans as a protected class in NYC human rights law. Loree’s campaign for Mayor is fueled by her conviction that New York City faces challenges which exceed the capacity of ‘politics as usual’ to lift up all New Yorkers and lead our city forward. Married to Laurie Leitch, Loree is stepmother to Laurie’s two children and cherishes their two grandsons.


Maya Wiley

Maya Wiley is a racial justice and equity advocate and candidate for Mayor of New York City. She is a veteran of the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund and the ACLU, and was a Legal Analyst for NBC News and MSNBC. Maya founded the Center for Social Inclusion and was Senior Advisor on Race and Poverty at the Open Society Foundations. As Counsel to the Mayor, Maya delivered for New Yorkers on civil and immigrant rights, women and minority owned business contracts, universal broadband access, and more. After leaving City Hall, she served as Chair of the Civilian Complaint Review Board, Co-Chair of the School Diversity Task Force, and University Professor at the New School. Maya holds a BA in Psychology from Dartmouth College, and a JD from Columbia University School of Law. She resides in Brooklyn, with her partner Harlan, and her two daughters.
